The Moti Nagar police of west district have busted a gang of ‘filmy’ robbers and auto lifters and arrested two persons. The kingpin of the gang had changed his name to ‘Sidhu’ after being fascinated by the lead actor of the Bollywood flick ‘Ghulam’, played by Aamir Khan.

The arrested robbers have been identified as Chandan Kumar aka Sidhu, 19, and Hari Om, 22.

V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west) said Sidhu wanted to become the ‘Don’ of the world of crime. In fact, ‘Ghulam’ had inspired him that he used to copy the various action sequences of the movie.

“Not only had he named himself after the protagonist of the film, he even used to race against trains on a railway track in west Delhi’s Zakhira, like Aamir did in the film,” said Renganathan. The gang was involved in several road robberies and had even injured an elderly couple in their bid to rob them in May this year.

According to Renganathan, the two were arrested following a rise in incidents of road robberies and auto lifting in west Delhi during odd hours.

“Such incidents had created a sense of insecurity among the public. Raj Kumar, SHO Moti Nagar, was asked to identify the gang involved. The two were apprehended following a tip-off about their arrival in Bali Nagar on a motorcycle,” Renganatha added.

During interrogation, a senior investigating officer said, it was revealed that the two are illiterate and came from poor families. They used to earn their livelihood by working in private factories.

“Unsatisfied with their incomes, they fell in the company of anti-social elements and started committing petty offences. The lust for easy and quick money drove them to the world of crime,” the officer said.
