In one of the biggest catches made in recent times, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police confiscated 221kg of ganja (marijuana) from drug traffickers in New Delhi.

The police arrested four persons, including a 60-year-old man, for allegedly smuggled ganja from Orissa.

The arrested were identified as Lakhvinder Singh (60), Pradeep Singh (35) and Kuldeep Singh (32) and Gurcharan Singh (47). The police said the drug traffickers, arrested from Samaipur Badli, allegedly used to smuggle the marijuana via road.

“They used two cars to smuggle ganja. The total ganja recovered was 221kg. A case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered in the matter,” said Ashok Chand, deputy commissioner of police (crime).

According to the police, the smugglers allegedly procured the marijuana from Sambalpur in Orissa and drove non-stop to reach Delhi.

“The ganja was to be delivered to Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Chander Vihar, and Raj Kumar, a resident of Hastsal — the two alleged kingpins of the racket. Both are absconding. Efforts are on to nab them," Chand said.

The police said that the four made multiple trips to Sambalpur. According to the police, the accused used Hyundai Accent cars. The accused were intercepted near Mukarba Chowk, Samaipur Badli.

"Pradeep Singh has undertaken 14 trips to Orissa to buy ganja, while Lakhvinder has undertaken 10 trips for the same. Gurcharan went to Orissa thrice and Kuldeep has undertaken four trips to Orissa to collect ganja in the past," said Chand.

According to the police, this is the biggest singular haul of marijuana in recent times.

"This year there has been a spurt in the number of cases and arrests in narcotics related busts. We are making efforts to nab the absconding members of the gang," added Chand.
