Three gun runners, who were allegedly attempting to smuggle more than a dozen sophisticated firearms were caught ‘red-handed’ by the special cell, police said on Sunday. The firearms were to be sold to criminals operating in the NCR.

The trio was waylaid and nabbed from near the Anand Vihar-Ghazipur foot-over bridge around 5pm on Saturday, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell). Their identities have been withheld due to the ongoing investigation.

“A Swift Dzire car was spotted going towards Anand Vihar. Upon confirmation from the informer, it was cornered. A cursory search of their persons and the car did not reveal anything incriminating, so a thorough systematic search was resorted to,” Yadav said.

During the search, the police team’s attempt to wind down the window panes of the car strangely failed. So, the inner beading and padding of the rear right gate of the car were removed and 15 high-quality pistols along with 30 empty magazines were found concealed in a cavity.

“During preliminary interrogation, the main accused revealed that he was the younger brother of a criminal from Meerut who had been killed in a police encounter over a decade ago. He was also found to have been involved in three other cases, one each of circulating fake currency, the Arms Act and the Gangster Act over 11 years,” said DCP Yadav.

The special cell, over the past several months, has been working hard to check the rampant smuggling of Munger-made illicit firearms into the NCR to effectively curb the flourishing business, police said.

“In the past one year, a total of 54 high-quality weapons were seized, which helped curb proliferation of weapons used by criminals for committing heinous crimes,” Yadav added.
