“As per her own statement given to a doctor when she was rushed to the Lok Nayak Hospital, she was injured in a stampede and not in a lathi charge,” explained Dharmendra Kumar, special commissioner of police (law and order).

Refuting allegations of brutality levelled by the family of the former Gurgaon councillor against the Delhi Police, Kumar said that the police were not even present on the stage, where Bala claimed to have been when the alleged crackdown took place.

“As per her medical history, she was suffering from gross osteoporosis — a medical condition in which bones become very brittle, and hence, susceptible to injury,” Special CP Kumar said. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police sources have claimed that Bala had been chargesheeted by the Gurgaon Police in two criminal cases, including one murder and criminal conspiracy.

“Way back in 1999, she was charged in a case of rioting with others, while in 2008, Bala and some of her relatives had been charged for murder and criminal conspiracy. Their victim was identified as Neetu Gehlot,” said a senior police officer.
