The Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Friday arrested four young men — all school dropouts — in connection with 10 robbery cases across the Capital.
According to the police, the passion for wearing branded clothes and leading a luxurious life led all four to resort to crime.
In some cases, they used blades to scare the victims, the police said.
“The accused used to commit robberies and snatching in order to earn quick money to support their lavish lifestyle,” said Ashok Chand, DCP (west).
The police recovered one motorcycle, four surgical blades and Rs 1.5 lakh from their possession.
The men — identified as Amit Kumar, 22; Vishant, 21; Hemant 20 and Ravi, 18 — are residents of a JJ colony in Shakurpur.
According to the police, the gang operated both on foot and on motorcycle. They used surgical blades and small knives to intimidate and assault their victims.
“Their usual targets were people travelling alone. One of the gang members would catch the victims by neck and try to choke them. If the victims resisted, the assailants would slash their throats with surgical blades or stab with a small knife,” Chand said.
The gang targeted the victims on deserted streets and at railway crossings. They operated both during the day and night. “During the day, they usually targeted women and the elderly,” Chand added.
The gang members are believed to be involved in several robberies and cases of snatching in Rani Bagh, Saraswati Vihar, Keshav Puram, Bharat Nagar and Ashok Vihar.
