Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case against unknown people under Explosives Substances Act in connection with attempts to light crackers kept in a bottle resulting in a "very low intensity" blast in Mehrauli in South Delhi.

The incident took place at the parking area of Ambavati Complex in Mehrauli on Monday night when unidentified people tried to fire a cracker kept inside a bottle. No one was injured in the incident.

Police registered a case under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of Explosives Substances Act in connection with the incident this morning at Mehrauli police station, a senior police official said.

These sections deal with causing explosion, attempt to cause explosion and making and possessing explosives, the official said. The punishment range from five years to life imprisonment and fine.

"The crackers were inside the bottle. The area was soily. It was fired and instead of shooting up, it exploded and went downwards. There was a very low intensity explosion. This scared people who were around," the official said.

The official said initially there was a bomb scare, but as police reached the spot they found that it was firecracker and some inflammable liquid which was packed inside what seems as a glass bottle.

"Initial investigations suggest that there was some inflammable fluid inside the bottle which triggered the explosion," the official said adding they believe that it was a "mischief" played by some persons.
