The Delhi Police united a couple in matrimony on Monday even though there was a rape complaint against the boy filed by the girl’s family.

The couple had been in love for several years and wanted to spend their life together. But the girl’s family disapproved of the relationship because they did not want to accept a cab driver as the husband of their daughter, a student of Delhi University (DU).

And to make sure that the couple did not marry each other against their wishes, the girl’s allegedly family filed a rape complaint against the boy and landed him in the custody of the Paharganj police.

But, unlike previous cases where Delhi Police registered FIRs on complaints related to crime against women, the central district police decided to act differently when the girl admitted her relationship with the boy and wished to marry him.

Not only did they convince the family members of the couple for the marriage but also went ahead with their plan and made all the arrangements for the couple’s wedding at an Arya Samaj Temple in central Delhi area.

Today, the duo are happily married and the initiative of the officers of the Paharganj police station is being praised by top Delhi Police officers.

The entire drama, a senior police officer said, started on Sunday morning when family members of a 20-year-old girl, who is pursuing her graduation course from DU, approached the Paharganj police to lodge a rape case against their neighbour.

In the complaint, the girl’s parents alleged that the neighbour was sexually exploiting their daughter for the past few months. “They wanted us to lodge an FIR against their neighbour and arrest him. Understanding the gravity of the complaint, we immediately picked up the boy who claimed that he was having an affair with the complainants’ daughter,” said a police officer.

The girl, who was already under pressure, first rejected his claims but later confessed her love for him after an NGO was roped in and she was given proper counselling. The family members of the girl were counselled and were made to understand the legal implications of the matter.

Both the families eventually agreed to the marriage that was solemnized at an Arya Samaj Temple on Monday in the presence of several police officers.
