The special investigation team (SIT) probing the Sunanda Pushkar murder case may go for a lie-detector test on her husband former Union minister MP Shashi Tharoor if required, sources in Delhi police said on Friday.
The SIT has already moved a plea in the Patiala House Court, seeking permission for conducting a polygraph test on the three key witnesses in the case. The SIT officials are now treating the three persons as “suspects” in the murder case, as investigators have accused them of allegedly concealing certain important facts pertaining to the probe.
This is the first time in the last four months that investigators have officially used the word “suspects” in the murder probe. The three witnesses - Narain Singh (domestic help), Bajrangi (driver) and Shashi Tharoor’s friend Sanjay Dewan - have been summoned by the court on May 20 to hear the police’s plea. They were present at Hotel Leela Palace just before Sunanda’s death.
Even as the top brass in Delhi Police refused to confirm, sources in the south Delhi police said a decision has been taken of filing a petition seeking a polygraph screening on Tharoor and around a dozen witnesses who have already been quizzed once or twice in the case.
Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi, however, refused to “speculate” in the matter. “An investigation is conducted as per an action plan. The investigating officer (IO) keeps reviewing his evidence he gathers during the probe and whatever is necessary is done. At this juncture, we will not like to speculate (about Tharoor) but there is nothing to be read in this. I can assure you that,” said Bassi when asked whether the Congress MP too would have to go for polygraph test.
Yadav informed, on January 17, Dewan came to the hotel at 5pm and remained there till the discovery of Sunanda’s death. He could not give a plausible reason for cancelling his Mumbai trip and his coming to the hotel in Delhi, his application said.
“He remained silent about the power cut on January 17, 2014 at about 7pm in room no. 345 at Leela Hotel just before the discovery of the death of Sunanda Pushkar, while he was present in the room along with Shashi Tharoor,” the application said, adding he did not properly reply to questions regarding the injuries on Sunanda’s body.
