The mood within the BJP after the arrest of former telecom minister A Raja is a combination of jubilation and concern. While the party has a spring in its stride on tasting blood after a protracted struggle against ‘UPA corruption’, there are voices that feel the paradox of holding on to Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa while attacking the Prime Minister and the Centre is too obvious to be missed.

With the Centre showing ‘action’ on Raja as the Parliamentary and Karnataka budget sessions approach to counter the Opposition charges, some BJP leaders feel the continuation of Yeddyurappa with the Lingayat vote in mind can take the sting out of the party’s anti-corruption campaign. Some leaders are voicing this in hushed tones, a day after a BJP core committee meet also discussed the issue.

With the differences between the party and PAC chairman Murli Manohar Joshi having been supposedly resolved after Joshi supported a JPC weeks back, the party is attacking the government at two levels--through public rallies and statements by top leaders, and the parallel activity of Joshi from the PAC forum that is clearly embarrassing the government.

On Thursday, PAC called RBI governor D Subbarao in his capacity as former finance secretary, and asked him about his communications with DoT.

“It has helped us understand quite a lot about the ministry,” said Joshi, refusing to divulge details.

Meanwhile, while addressing BJP Delhi state activists on the Kashmir issue, Arun Jaitley attacked the PM for not acting against Raja for three years.

“What was the reason that lakhs of crores were lost and the government did not act for three years,” he asked. “It’s like the theatre of the absurd that you don’t stop Raja for three years and then take some action for show.”

BJP president Nitin Gadkari also said onus is on the PM and cabinet for decisions on the 2G spectrum allocation.
