President congratulates Pakistan's Zardari

President Pratibha Patil on Tuesday congratulated Asif Ali Zardari, the new president of Pakistan, saying his election was a "milestone" in that country's history.

In her message to Zardari, Patil said: "Your election is a milestone in Pakistan's history. It symbolizes the durability and strength of democratic forces in Pakistan.”

“The resurgence of these forces is in the interest of Pakistan as also our entire region. You face immense challenges and we are committed to working closely with you to further develop bilateral relations between two countries for the mutual benefit of our peoples and our region," a statement issued New Delhi said.

Zardari, 55, husband of slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, on Tuesday took oath as Pakistan's new president for a five-year term.
