A day after reports came that a senior CAG official had written to deputy CAG Rekha Gupta in July 2010 that PAC chairman Murli Manohar Joshi had asked him to expedite the CAG report on the 2G spectrum, Joshi sought to clear the air on the issue.
"That I was pressurising the CAG is a false and bogus charge being made to defame the CAG and PAC," Joshi said.
"CAG had assured the PAC on January 28, 2010 that its 2G report would be ready in six months ... When they had assured us they would give the report in six months, it was our duty to ask to be briefed on this."
Clarifying that he had not asked about the contents of the report but the time when it would be ready, Joshi produced a letter from CAG Rector General RB Sinha to DG of Audit (Post & Telecommunications) RP Singh to establish that the CAG had told the PAC in January 2010 that it would submit the report in six months.
In a related development, Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam has written a letter Joshi, asking him to explain the contents of his reported communication with PM Manmohan Singh on December 2, 2007.
In the letter, Joshi reportedly advised the PM not to auction the 2G spectrum, ensure a level-playing field through a licensing policy and protects the interests of genuine players. Nirupam accused Joshi of concealing facts by not informing the PAC about the said letter and asked him to identify the “genuine players".
