Freedom for women like Rama Kali Devi, a Dalit in her 50s in a remote Haryana village, from their drunken husbands has got President Pratibha Devisingh Patil’s accolade.
Patil has invited a group of women led by Dalit panchayat head Roshani Devi to Rashtrapti Bhawan at the month-end for a meeting and felicitation.
“I am impressed by the bold and courageous step of Roshani Devi and other women in Pothal Khurd to fight against alcholism,” the President said, in a message to Roshani.
HT had reported Roshani’s struggle to end drinking in public places in her village (Haryana woman’s stops public drinking in the June 3 edition).
Till the initiative was taken, many men in the village like Rama Kali’s husband Dhani Ram, 56, used to drink regularly. “They would physically abused their wives,” Roshani had said.
“An award from a woman (the President) gives me courage to spread the message against alcoholism and social evils that harm woman’s dignity to live with honour,” Roshani told HT over phone from her village.
