A 55-year-old priest was arrested on Monday for raping his colleague's wife at his east Delhi residence.

Identified as Madan Mohan Sharma, the accused had lured the woman to his Pandav Nagar residence on the evening of January 1 where he sexually assaulted her. He was produced in front of a magistrate on Monday and was sent to judicial custody.

"On the fateful evening, Sharma had called his colleague over the phone and requested help in preparing a meal for guests at Ram Mandir located in Mayur Vihar phase I," said an officer.

His colleague, police said, who also stays in his neighbourhood, had told Sharma that he would send his wife to help cook the meal. Minutes after she had reached his room - located within the temple's premises - Sharma forced himself on her.

"Realising that he and the victim were all alone, Sharma grabbed her victim and assaulted her. He threatened her with dire consequences before fleeing," the officer said.

The traumatised victim returned home and narrated the incident to her husband who registered a complaint at the Pandav Nagar Police Station.

A case was registered after the woman's medical examination confirmed rape.
