Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will interact more frequently with party workers and constituents of Rae Bareli, a Lok Sabha constituency represented by her mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
According to a Gandhi family close aide, the new arrangement has been put in place on the request of party workers and voters of Rae Bareli.
“She will meet them if Soniaji is busy with other engagements and also visit Rae Bareli in case the Congress president is unable to visit the constituency for a long time,” he said.
During her two-day visit to Rae Bareli on July 26, Sonia got repeated requests from the workers and voters that she should ask Priyanka, to meet them in Delhi or visit the constituency.
“Madam assured them that she would convey this to Priyankaji,” the aide said.
Henceforth, Priyanka will meet them more often in Delhi and also visit Rae Bareli “as and when required”.
Priyanka had campaigned for the Congress in the family pocket borough of Rae Bareli and Amethi, which is represented by her brother and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, in all the previous elections, including 2009 Lok Sabha and the recent 2012 assembly elections.
However, the close aides ruled out the possibility of Priyanka joining the active politics in the immediate future.
“The move should not be construed as her plunge into active politics. Whenever she gets time, Priyanka makes it a point to visit Rae Bareli, Amethi and Sultanpur,” he said.
