GN Saibaba, the wheelchair-bound professor from Delhi University accused of having links with Maoists, may be out on temporary bail, but is facing financial troubles earning just half of the last drawn salary since his arrest and suspension.

The English professor from Ram Lal Anand College is undergoing treatment for multiple problems of the heart, spinal cord, kidney and left shoulder, which became totally dysfunctional while in prison.

“The major part of the treatment money will be reimbursed by the college, but later. Apart from it there are also several other things which are not covered under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). So I am personally bearing it,” said Saibaba, a person with 90% disability.

The committee for the Defence and Release of Saibaba said the problem was because he was being given only half his salary, though rules say he is entitled to three fourths of his salary.

However, the a senior official of the college said they were paying him as per rules.

Alongside a legal battle to contest his alleged wrongful arrest and being subsequently kept in a cell of the Nagpur central jail which is otherwise meant for terrorists, he said it cost the medical expenses were a lot to bear for the family.

Further, the eviction notice from the university has forced the family to shift to a rented accommodation.

“Just yesterday we shifted to a rented house at Vasant Vihar. Now with all other expenses, this too has been added,” said Saibaba, whose family consists of his old mother, wife and a college-going daughter.

So far, contributions to the committee supported the professor’s medical treatments. Now the committee has appealed to the people to help the professor till he is reinstated to his teaching position.

Saibaba was suspended from DU after he was arrested by the Maharashtra Police in 2014 for alleged Maoist links. He was lodged in the Nagpur Central Jail for 14 months, and granted bail in July 2015 after the court noticed his deteriorating health conditions.
