A 47-year-old property dealer and his wife suffered gunshot injuries after three unidentified bike-borne miscreants fired at them in central Delhi’s Desh Bandhu Gupta Road area on Friday night. The police said a pet dog belonging to the victim’s relative was also shot dead by the assailants when he barked at them after hearing the gunshots.

The victims — identified as Satbir and his wife Kaushalya (45) — had come to their relatives’ house at Siddhipura to participate in an engagement ceremony on Friday.

The family members went to Ghaziabad to attend the engagement ceremony of Satbir’s brother-in-law with a local girl.

“They returned to Siddhipura at night. The couple was waiting for an autorickshaw to return to their residence in west Delhi’s Raghubir Nagar when the miscreants struck at 10.40pm,” said a police officer.

The couple was on the main road when three unidentified bike-borne men asked Satbir about Kaushalya’s brother.

But before Satbir could react, the assailants fired two bullets at the couple. “Satbir was shot in the hand, while Kushalya escaped unhurt. The miscreants also killed the pet dog of the victim’s relative,” the officer added.

The injured couple was rushed to Jeevan Mala Hospital where Kaushalya was discharged after treatment. Satbir is recuperating at the hospital.

The dog’s body was sent to Lajpat Nagar veterinary hospital for a post-mortem examination.

“The bullet extracted from the dog’s body will be used as evidence,” the police said.

The police claimed that the three accused had some enmity with Kaushalya’s brother and were searching for him.

“We have formed a team and are trying to trace the assailants,” said a senior officer. A case of attempt to murder and cruelty against animals has been registered.
