Several protests and rallies in the national Capital on Friday hit traffic on a number of arterial roads of the city, mostly in central and New Delhi areas.

The worst affected areas were central Delhi roads including busy stretches connecting Millennium Park with Indraprastha Flyover, ITO with Indraprastha Marg and Mathura Road with Bhairon Road.

A Sikh rally also put traffic on standstill at several points in Central Delhi.

The police had also closed the entire Bhairon Marg for about an hour since 11.30am because of a rally organised by United Hindu Front over a Supreme Court judge’s comment on Radha Krishna in relation to a judgment on live-in relationships. Though protesters tried to march all the way to the apex court, only a delegation was allowed by Delhi police to submit a memorandum.

Another protest by the Retailers and Distributors Chemists Association at Jantar Mantar led to traffic congestions on several New Delhi roads such as Akbar Road, Ashoka Road, and Parliament Street, among others.

A traffic police officer said, “Though traffic slowed down on several stretches due to protests, the situation never spiraled out of control as all protests were during non-peak hours”.
