A short-staffed Delhi Police has decided to rope in ‘physical training instructors’ from police training colleges into the security services, less than 80 days before the Commonwelath Games.

Besides, policemen deployed as cooks and sweepers at the houses of retired police officers will be made to work for the force deployed for security during the Games.

Several officers would be left without their official cars, as they will be taken to provide security to delegates and sportspersons during the October Games.

These and several other decisions were taken during a meeting held at the Delhi Police headquarters in preparation for the upcoming Games.

The police had floated tenders for hiring cooks for the force to be deployed at various barracks and police stations during the Games.

Another tender was floated for hiring 1,000 escort vehicles. None of the above found any bidders.

Only one company has come forward to provide 300 cars on contract basis.

Recently, the Delhi Police Commissioner had convened a meeting to review security preparations of the CW Games.

"No proposal has been received for outsourcing of cooks and sweepers during the Commonwealth Games. The Commissioner has directed to expedite it by withdrawing cooks and sweepers deployed with retired officers who will facilitate the staff staying at barracks," the minutes of the meeting held at the police headquarters read.

Delhi Police has been floating tenders for the past six months to hire cars as "escort vehicles" for the buses and other vehicles ferrying delegates and players.

"Only one bid for hiring 300 escort vehicles has been received. The tender for vehicles required for supervisory forces of central police force and Tata 407 has failed and no bidder has come forward," the document read.

"As a fall back arrangement, the Commissioner has directed to mobilise vehicles from within the Delhi Police, withdrawing ambassador cars and gypsies from officers who are on administrative duties."

The document said drill instructors at police training college in Jharoda Kalan would be diverted to the security wing.
