The police might have gotten to know about the fraud at Citibank on Monday night, but the guards at Hamilton Court, a posh apartment complex in DLF phase 4 here, knew something was wrong long before that. Shivraj Puri, a relationship manager with Citibank, who has been booked for siphoning off more than R200 crore of account holder’s money, lives in the apartment complex.

According to the residents at Hamilton Court, in the past two weeks, movement at Puri’s residence, 425-A, had increased considerably. “As his wife is living with her parents in Delhi, Puri was living alone in the apartment. In the past 14 days, several people visited him regularly,” said a guard at the Hamilton Court.

However, no police team visited the house till Wednesday evening. “At 4pm on Wednesday, four policemen came,” he said.

Residents said Puri was last seen on December 17. The visitors’ book at the entry gate showed that a man named Babu visited him on that day. It also revealed that in the past month, Babu used to visit Puri almost every alternate day. “Puri was not the kind of person who interacted much with people. For the past few days, he had stopped going to office and was at home,” another resident of Hamilton court said.

Sources said during the course of Citibank’s internal probe, a team from the US visited Puri’s house. The bank had been looking into suspicious transactions for a month now.

A Citibank spokesperson said: “We recently initiated a probe into a certain set of suspicious transactions based on documents forged by an employee involving accounts in our Gurgaon branch. We immediately reported the matter to all regulatory and law enforcement authorities.”

Assistant commission of police Dalbir Singh said: “No one associated with Puri would be spared from questioning. We will question his wife, too.”
