With the Centre accepting demand for a separate Telangana state, questions are being raised over the fate of Hyderabad, the cosmopolitan city, which is part of Telangana region.

Being the Andhra Pradesh capital, the IT-savvy city of 70 lakh population has, over decades, attracted a large number of people from the other two regions of the state-coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.

Cutting across party lines, several city leaders and intellectuals from various walks of life have advocated Union Territory status for Hyderabad, when a separate Telangana state will be formed.

Minister for Backward Classes Welfare Mukesh Goud, who represents Ghoshamahal assembly segment in the city, said he would initiate a movement to get UT status for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), media reports said.

According to reports, Goud contended that Hyderabad symbolised “mini India” as people from all over the country had made it their home and granting Union Territory status would be a fitting recognition for the city.

Telangana region comprises 10 districts including Hyderabad, which recently became Greater Hyderabad following the merger of surrounding municipalities and villages.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), on the other hand, said that the party would not accept the new state without Hyderabad even though it welcomed Centre decision.
