The blue dungaree sporting men of the Rapid Action Force, specifically established to control riots, will now don bullet proof jackets when deployed in life-threatening assignments, including at sites of terror attacks.

The jackets will be given to a select number of RAF on-duty men who till now used to wear 'tactical' jackets while dealing with rioters.

"The RAF's role is ever-challenging and increasing in the present security scenario. To protect our personnel in situations like the one in Mumbai and for various life threatening assignments in Jammu and Kashmir, bulletproof jackets are the need of the hour," Inspector-General (RAF) JC Dabas told PTI.

At least 30 per cent of the personnel out of the total of 12,000 men, will be equipped with brand new such jackets.

The force, which cordoned off the areas of terror attacks in Mumbai, as other forces -- NSG, MARCOS, Maharashtra ATS and army -- took on the terrorists, will now include the experience in its history, showcased at the newly set up museum of the force at the national capital.

The RAF was the first special force, after the Mumbai Police to reach Taj hotel after it was scrambled from near Navi Mumbai.

"The Mumbai incident will now be added to the history of the force where it worked to cut escape routes for terrorists. The 102nd battalion of the force, stationed near Mumbai, was deployed at the Taj hotel, Oberoi (Trident) and Nariman House since it was summoned by the Mumbai Police Commissioner in the night of November 26," Dabas said.
