When 55-year-old Kale Ram, an NDMC contractor lay injured on the road waiting for help after a taxi hit him on Tuesday, a ‘messiah’ in white walked up to him and saved his life.

Much later did he realise that the man who saved his life was none other than AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

Even after 24 hours of the incident, Ram is still not ready to believe his good fortune.

“I was running late for office on Tuesday. While on Krishna Menon Marg, a car hit me from behind. After that all I remember is cars whizzing past me. No one came forward to help. Then I see a number of men getting out of big cars and a man in white kurta pajama comes and picks me up,” said the contractor for New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).

According to police, the special protection group (SPG) men accompanying Gandhi helped him get in one of their SUVs and took him to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Ram came to know that the messiah was none other than Rahul Gandhi only when the SPG men told him.

“I was more shocked than surprised. I never thought someone like him would help a man dying on the road,” he added.

It was only after the SUVs in Gandhi’s cavalcade stopped, a PCR van escorted them to the hospital. The police nabbed the accused on Tuesday night. It was a taxi driven by one Ajay Kumar. “We have arrested and booked him,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
