Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is expected to return to India on August 14 in order to be in the country for the Independence day celebrations.
Rahul is at present with his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi who is recovering after a successful surgery abroad on August 4.
Though the party still continues to be tightlipped about the nature of the surgical procedure and the country of her destination, unconfirmed reports suggested that Sonia, 64, is in the US.
Congress sources said since Sonia's condition is now stable and showing improvement, Rahul could be in the country for the Independence day celebrations. He has conveyed his arrival date, which is most likely to be August 14, to senior party leaders.
Back in India, Rahul will have a busy schedule and on many occasions he is set to don the role of his mother. Parliament is also in session.
Congress sources said he has already given his consent to attend the presentation of the 19th Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana award in place of Sonia at Teen Murti House on August 20. This year, the award will be given to SPIC MACAY, an institution working for the promotion of Indian classical music and culture among the youth, for promotion of communal harmony, peace and goodwill.
On the same day, Praja Rajyam Party founder and actor K Chiranjeevi, who had merged his party with the Congress in February this year, will in Rahul's presence take the Congress membership at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
Though there is also speculation that he might unfurl the national flag at the AICC headquarters as the Congress president is away, top party functionaries indicated that Rahul might ask senior most leader Motilal Vora to do the honours.
