The 23-km high-speed Metro line got the safety nod from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on Monday and is expected to open within a week.

“We will offer our commuters inaugural fare, which is going to be significantly lesser than the fare that we are authorised to charge. We may increase it later, depending on the volume of traffic we receive,” said KP Maheswari, director of Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd (DAMEPL), the concessionaire company of the high-speed line.

The company had earlier decided to keep the travel fare between R50 and R180.

However, in a bid to popularise the service, because of massive delay in starting operations, public lost its interest in it, the concessionaire company has decided to reduce the fare.

The service was to start by September end last year, before the Commonwealth Games, but as it failed to get safety clearance from the CMRS — mandatory for any Metro service.

Not only will there be relief in ticket prices, the company will also install automatic fare collection kiosks at every Metro station, apart from the manual token counters.

“We have installed the kiosks at every station so that during rush hours, people will not have to stand in queues for a token. Through user-friendly touch-screen kiosks, they can get a token directly by making payments through the machine,” said Maheswari.

DAMEPL also intends to make arrangements with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) so that commuters can travel in both Metro networks with a single token. “Our AFC machines are designed accordingly. We are now awaiting DMRC’s approval for the same,” said Maheswari.

DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal, however, said that will not be possible immediately.

“But we are likely to introduce a common smart card system for travelling in both networks. This will take a few months’ time, though,” he said.

Meanwhile, DAMEPL got fire clearance for the Aerocity Metro station and is expected to get fire clearance for Dhaula Kuan station within a week, said officials.
