The two year-term of Ranjan Mathai as the foreign secretary ended on Wednesday. Sujatha Singh, who was earlier India’s ambassador to Germany, will take charge as his successor on Thursday.

There will also be changes in the postings of key envoys in the coming months. While Mathai may head to London as India’s next High Commissioner, India’s envoy in Beijing S Jaishankar is tipped to succeed Nirupama Rao as India’s next ambassador to the US.

But Jaishankar will stay in Beijing till Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to China expected to be in October-November. Rao will also be staying in Washington till Singh’s visit to the US in September, it is learnt.

Mathai is making a quiet exit after steering the foreign office through two crucial years. Mathai, who stayed away from media glare, brought in many changes in the ministry, which include giving a common digital identity to the MEA, encouraging officials from other departments in government to work for Indian missions, making public delivery of MEA’s services, like passports, easier. He led through many crises in the neighbourhood dealing with complex issues with Maldives, Pakistan and China.
