It has delivered the civil services topper for the tenth year in a row. And for Vajiram and Ravi Institute for Civil Services Examination, a burning desire to succeed is more important than talent.

“A person needs to have a burning desire to qualify because preparation for the civil services demands at least two years of hard work,” said PS Ravindran, director of the coaching institute in Old Rajinder Nagar. “You have to start preparing one and a half years before the prelims. And consistent study is needed because sitting for the main exam is like sitting for three postgraduate exams simultaneously,” he said.

Subhra Saxena, the topper this year, is also a faculty member at the institute. “I made sure I had clarity in my subjects,” she said.

Second ranker Sharandeep Kaur Brar is a graduate of Punjab University, Chandigarh and did her coaching from Vajiram.

“It’s very important to get hold of the right study material and teachers. And one should always follow the tips given by teachers is order to succeed,” said Brar.

Vajiram has at least 350 success stories this year, with most of the top 25 slots going to its students.

Interestingly, Ravindran does not think it is compulsory for everyone to take coaching classes. “Many students qualify through self-study. But if you feel the necessity of joining one, you must verify the reputation of the institute first.”

Many aspirants also enroll in more than one coaching institute. “I joined Vajiram for general studies and got the best tips for the interview from Sriram's IAS," said Jyoti Yadav, a Delhi School of Economics graduate.
