With 25 companies offering about four jobs each on Day 1 of the placement season, the Indian Institute of Technology–Bombay (IIT-B) on Wednesday set a record across 15 IITs in the country.
The salaries offered by companies this year were at least 15 to 20% higher than last year thus indicating a successful start to the placement season. This is the second year that IIT-B invited more than 20 companies on the first day of placements. Last year, they had 21 companies on the first day of the placement season that lasted two months.
The IIT-B placements are the trendsetter for recruitments as this campus is the first choice for most companies.
More than 250 companies are expected to line up to hire 1300 students across courses such as B.Tech, Ph.D and dual degrees.
On Wednesday, the most-coveted companies including Facebook, which has returned for the second year, Citibank India, Google and Sony Japan were present on the IIT-B campus. “This is the first time that we had an research and development (R&D) profile on the first day. This shows that the sector is growing and the jobs are well paying,” said Ravi Sinha, chairman of the placement committee. Procter & Gamble offered the R&D profile.
With 200 students scheduled for interviews in two slots (8 am to 4 pm and 6 pm to 2 am), some had to juggle multiple interviews.
“It is very good for student morale to be placed on the first day. But we have strike a balance to ensure there is no student fatigue,” added Sinha.
