The Opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was quick to reject the cabinet reshuffle, saying it showed the government's lack of ability and courage to clean up the system. The Left too termed the reshuffle an eyewash.
"This reshuffle proves that the government has no ability or courage to take decisions. There is absolutely no political message in this reshuffle," said BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain. "People accused of corruption have been replaced but not removed..."
Hussain was hinting at ministers whose ministries or offices were associated with corruption being shifted - sports minister MS Gill and urban development Jaipal Reddy( whose ministries were part of the CWG), road minister Kamal Nath and civil aviation minister Praful Patel (Niira Radia tapes.)
Hussain was critical of the PM and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. "Soniaji's five bullet-points to Congressmen on preventing corruption fell flat today," he said. About the PM, Hussain said, "We expected the PM would show courage... But he has disappointed (all)."
NDA convener and JD(U) president Sharad Yadav said, "This is like antiques kept in one's drawing room are removed from one place to another. It means nothing."
Gurudas Dasgupta of the CPI said, A non-performing government has rearranged its incompetent ministers... This is just meant to deceive people."
