NEW DELHI: The locals of Mubarakpur village are scared. The fact that an alleged rapist roamed around at night while their children slept outdoors has taken away their sleep and they are all set to play the watch guards.
“If the police cannot ensure safety our and our children’s safety, we will have to take responsibility. We will have to arrange for a substitute for electricity as the BSES will not help us. We have to sleep outside because there is no electricity in the area and it is impossible to sleep inside in this weather. It is not our choice,” a local said.
“A rapist came here at night and was roaming around. He even had the guts to kidnap one of the kids and then rape her. Today it has happened to one family, tomorrow it can happen to our kids. We will now have to take turns to guard the area at night to make sure it is not repeated,” he said.
As the news broke, many went to the girl’s house to enquire about her health and extend support.
Though everyone was shocked, they were all praises for the girl to have used her presence of mind, to rescue herself from the youth. After she was sexually assaulted, the girl pretended to be dead, by holding her breath for over two minutes, after which he fled.
Speaking to HT, her father said, “She was limping when she returned home and when we asked what had happened, she said someone kidnapped her and tried to kill her. She did not mention anything about the sexual assault and went to sleep.”
“The next morning, when she started bleeding from her private parts and we spotted her swollen lips and bite marks on her neck, we asked her about what had happened. She refused to go for her tuition and started crying. It is then when we rushed her to the hospital.” he added.
Her father said that the girl got up from the spot, the moment he left and ran for home. Locals also told the police that they saw the youth in the area after the incident and he had shaved his head to hide his identity. He was however apprehended by the police. The police are investigating the youth’s past record.
