Freshly elected Congress legislators on Friday called on All India Congress Committee chief Sonia Gandhi to apparently thank her for the Congress victory in Delhi.
MLAs Chaudhury Prem Singh, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Haroon Yusuf, Tarwinder Singh Marwah, Rajesh Lilothia, Parvez Hashmi, Kunwar Karan Singh and Ambrish Gautam were among those who called on the Congress chief.
Meanwhile, speculation was rife in the Congress camp about who might make it to the final list of six in the Delhi cabinet. Even the MLAs visit to the Congress chief was being seen as an attempt to consolidate ones chances in the government.
“There is a possibility that A.K. Walia and Naseeb Singh may be included in the cabinet and Prem Singh be retained as the speaker of the Delhi assembly,” said a Congress leader, who also said that some leaders who were afraid of being sidelined had approached the AICC for help.
Others, however, refuted claims about ministerial berths having been decided in advance.
“It is the chief minister’s prerogative to decide who stays and who leaves and which fresh face is inducted in the cabinet. Only Sheila Dikshit and Sonia ji will make the final decision. Our courtesy call on the Congress chief is also being politicised,” said an MLA. He said the leaders were calling on Gandhi for the first time after winning the elections.
Others, who did not make it to the AICC chief’s residence, were seen biding their time at the chief minister designate's residence, hoping she would take note.
The wait has turned agonisingly long for the cabinet hopefuls as the swearing-in ceremony of the Delhi chief minister and her cabinet has now been deferred to December 17. The swearing-in ceremony was earlier due to be held on December 15.
