Results rosier this year
Overall pass percentage comes down a few points but more students receive awards for excellence compared with last year.
There may have been a decrease in the overall pass percentage this year, but this has been eclipsed by the significant qualitative improvement in the Class 12 Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) results.
As many as 700,983 candidates were registered for Class 12 exam in 6,035 schools across the country this year.
The pass percentage dropped from 81 to 79.87 per cent this year. But the Board awarded merit certificates to 8,572 students across the country (to recognise excellent performance in individual subjects) compared to 5,248 last year.
“Our results have shown a consistent improvement over the last three years and this is the result of the changes we have introduced in the kind of questions and the marking scheme,” said CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi.
Chennai topped the region-wise pass percentage with 92.17. Delhi stood second with 84.97 per cent. Students of Delhi government schools pipped their counterparts in Chennai to emerge on top in the government school category with a pass percentage of 88.86 per cent.
“For the last five years we have been doing consistently well. Our students have passed with flying colours despite the difficult questions papers set this year,” said Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely.
Girls outshine boys
It seems like an all-girls show as far as the list of toppers was concerned. Chennai’s Swati Prusty and R Gayatri, both from D.A.V. Girls Senior Secondary School, Llyod Road were the all-India toppers with 98 per cent aggregate.
In Delhi, too, two out of the three best performers were girls. The overall figures also reflected that girls have performed better with a pass percentage of 85.28 compared to 75.90 per cent notched by boys.
