To make sure that traffic chaos does not return to Connaught Place, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been asked to scrap the recarpeting of roads in the area till the Delhi Traffic Police and the civic body take a final decision on the construction work NDMC said they were widening the roads in the Outer Circle to decongest the area.

“The recarpeting of roads has been shelved in CP,” said Ajay Chaddha, special commissioner of police (traffic).

The decision was taken in wake of the spiralling jams in CP reported in the past fortnight due to construction of eight subways and the Auto Expo that concluded Monday.

A meeting headed by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor was convened on Monday where it was decided the four sites where construction of subways had not started yet be put on hold.

“We are still finalising ways to ease traffic congestion in CP. We will be able to chalk out a strategy only by the end of this week,” said Chaddha.

Police removed the blue tin barricades to open the road for easy flow of vehicles.

“Once the tunnels are dug up for building the subways, naturally the roads will be dug up and will have to be relaid.
However, to ease traffic we have already started road widening wherever possible,” said Anand Tiwari, spokesman, NDMC.
