In a shocking incident, armed robbers opened fire on a 45-year-old woman when she resisted their attempt to snatch her chain near Maharana Pratap Enclave in Saraswati Vihar in northwest Delhi on Monday night. The incident comes at a time when the city is on a high alert following the Mumbai terror attacks.
The woman, Naina Singh, had come out of a wedding reception along with her sister, Baby Singh (25), to go to the bathroom when two motorcycle-borne assailants attacked her, police said.
According to police, Baby, who is physically challenged, put up a brave fight before the robbers and managed to catch hold of one of them. In their bid to free themselves, the robbers opened fire on Naina and critically injured her.
After that the duo fled on the Enfield Bullet they were driving. Naina, who was shot at in the legs and abdomen, is still recuperating at a city hospital.
Police said as both robbers were wearing safety helmets, the women were not able to identify them. “Based on the woman’s account we have registered a case. Till now there has been no breakthrough but we will arrest culprits soon,” said NS Bundela, DCP (northwest).
Police said they were showing the women pictures of “known criminals” of the area to gather more details.
