Robbers in North Delhi’s Wazirabad village managed to flee with an entire ATM on Thursday morning. The ATM had funds to the tune of Rs 17 lakh at the time, police sources said.
According to police officials, the incident came to light at approximately 7am when the ATM guard found the ATM shutter broken and alerted the police and bank officials.
According to the statement of the guard, the shutter of the ATM kiosk was forcefully opened and the machine was uprooted. “Three teams including the police station staff and special staff have been formed to look into the matter,” said Madhur Verma, DCP (north).
According to bank officials, the ATM was not accessible 24X7 and was shut down at midnight only to be opened at 7 am.
Sources said that the theft indicated that the thieves were professionals and they knew about the the functioning of ATM.
Initial investigations have found that the CCTV cameras at the ATM were damaged so that the police could not get a clear image of the burglars. “There were three CCTV cameras installed in and outside the ATM. However, the burglars managed to tamper with the cameras at the entrance to secure their identity. But the two cameras inside the ATM have captured the entire incident,” said a police official.
Sources said that the CCTV footage shows three robbers breaking into the kiosk at around 2.30am. All three were masked and carried out the theft with caution, police said.
The police have registered a case of burglary at Timarpur police station. Further investigations are underway.
Sources in the department claim that internal involvement in the case cannot be ruled out. “Three people have been captured in the CCTV footage but there is a possibility of the involvement of at least one more person,” said a senior police official.
According to ATM experts, ATM machines have a self-locking mechanism which auto locks during an attempt to break into the system and can only be opened by a trained professional.
“The burglars pulled out the wires of the machine which could have locked the cash box. After that they dug it up using a crowbar and took it away in a tempo,” police said.
