The Rajya Sabha today mourned the death of its former member Maruti Mane, who passed away last week at the age of 72.
When the House met for the day, Chairman Hamid Ansari made the obituary reference.
A well known wrestler, Mane won gold medal in freestyle category and silver medal in the Greek Roman category at the Asian Games in Jakarta in 1962.
A recipient of Hind Kesari Puraskar in 1964, he represented Maharashtra in the Upper House from July 1985 to July 1986.
"In the passing away of Mane, the country has lost a sportsman par excellence and an able parliamentarian," Ansari said in his condolence message.
"We deeply mourn the passing away of Mane," he said after which the House observed silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the departed.
