Ruchika molestation case: Story so far

After almost 22 years, family of Ruchika Girhotra, gave up battle for justice against former Haryana director general of police (DGP) SPS Rathore. Ruchika had committed suicide in 1993 after being molested by the ex-top cop.

Twists and turns so far:

Aug 12, 1990: Ruchika and her friend Aradhana visit SPS Rathore’s house-cum-HLTA office. Rathore sends Aradhana away on pretext of calling coach, starts molesting Ruchika, leaves her as Aradhana returns.

Aug 16-17, 1990: Complaint filed by family against then-IGP Rathore sent to Haryana CM, who marks probe by then-DGP RR Singh.

Sept 3, 1990: RR Singh concludes that allegations were prima facie true and recommends registration of case, investigation by crime branch of CID.

Sept 20, 1990: Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, Chandigarh expels Ruchika.

Oct 6, 1992 to Sept 4, 1993: Ruchika’s brother is booked in theft cases, allegedly on the behest of Rathore to pressure for withdrawal of complaint.

Dec 28, 1993: Ruchika allegedly commits suicide.

Apr 30, 1997: Ashu acquitted in theft cases by a Panchkula court.

Aug 21, 1998: On petition by Madhu Parkash, mother of Aradhana, HC directs CBI to probe molestation case.

Dec 12, 1999: CBI registers molestation case against Rathore.

Dec 21, 2009: Lower court holds Rathore guilty, hand him six months’ jail (subsequent bail).

Dec 29, 2009: FIR registered against Rathore, cops for alleged torture of Ashu; another FIR for forgery of SC Girhotra’s signatures.

Jan 5, 2010: FIR for abetment to suicide registered against Rathore.

May 25, 2010: Sessions court enhances sentence in molestation case to 18 months.

Sept 1, 2010: HC upholds Rathore’s punishment.

Nov 10, 2010: CBI files closure reports in a case of forging of SC Girhotra’s signature and the case of Ashu’s custodial torture.

Nov 11, 2010: SC grants bail to Rathore in molestation case.

June 1, 2012: As family does not object, CBI court accepts two closure reports.
