The Aam Aadmi Party’s Mangolpuri MLA Rakhi Birla found herself in another controversy over allegations that she received a brand new Scorpio car as a gift on her birthday.
Reports of a brawl at her birthday party on Wednesday surfaced though the party denied them. Residents of Kirari constituency said they had gone to protest against their MLA Rituraj Jha outside the venue of the party and were thrown out.
“We learnt that Jha had gone to attend Birla’s birthday party and we went there to protest against him. We were beaten up there by Jha’s supporters who are shielding a murderer,” said one of the protesters.
There were rumours that a businessman from the area had gifted Birla a car that was parked outside the venue. Party members denied all allegations. A party spokesperson said there was no brawl.
“The Kirari MLA has launched a drive against gambling dens in the area. So some people have been trying to corner him for the past few days. Recently, a murder took place in the area and now these people are alleging that Jha is shielding the accused. This is untrue but the protesters reached the venue with placards against Jha. They were not allowed to enter. There was no brawl,” said a spokesperson.
AAP denied that Birla was gifted a car. “The car belongs to one of our volunteers. He bought it on Wednesday. We have all the papers to prove that the car has not been gifted to Birla. It belongs to a volunteer who has been with AAP since 2013,” the spokesperson added.
