Over 140 Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in the Capital have joined hands with Hindustan Times and its partner JustMyNeighbour to support the Earth Hour - an initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

On March 26, the residents of these RWAs will get together and would engage in community activities during the Earth Hour including painting and poem recitation competitions for which Hindustan Times has volunteered to sponsor prizes. In addition to it, the Hindustan Times is also inviting RWAs to send in their entries to on how they celebrated the Earth Hour. The three most innovative RWAs will get a cash prize of Rs50,000 each.

“As lights will be switched off, we have decided to organise community functions during the hour,” said Ranbir Tokas, a member of RWA of Rohini Sector-9.

Over 1,000 RWA and market associations in Delhi have assured the power utilities to switch off home lights for the Earth Hour. “We have sent an appeal to over 2,000 RWAs in Delhi to observe Earth Hour,” said Delhi's environment secretary Dharmendra. Power utilities have also sent SMSes to consumers to observe the Earth Hour. “We are preparing a youth brigade where our children will come together and pledge residents to observe the Earth Hour," said Navita Mansingh, a RWA member in Gurgaon.
