North Delhi Municipal Corporation

A day after HT reported how 1,400-odd contract teachers of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation received a circular that said their pay hike had been rolled back, commissioner PK Gupta on Tuesday said they will continue to get the increased salaries.

The salary of the teachers was hiked from Rs. 13,500 to Rs. 23,200 per month in December 2012.

But on Monday, the councillors of the corporation got a new circular issued by the corporation, announcing a rollback of the hike. This led to a lot of confusion with councillors demanding that the circular be taken back.

"The circular was issued without taking essential permission and so does not stand. Teachers will continue to get the increased salary, let there be no confusion about that," Gupta said.

The corporation had in 2012 increased the salary of contractual teachers in order to encourage capable teachers to join municipal schools.

The orders were implemented in four of the six zones of north corporation where about 900 teachers received the hike from December onwards.

They were waiting for their February's salary when the circular was released. The north corporation has more than 700 schools in which 4.25 lakh students are enrolled.

"Teachers have welcomed the decision. Yesterday, a lot of teachers were confused about their salaries," said Mahender Nagpal, leader of the house.
