First, the Samajwadis sought to redeem their support for the nuclear deal among Muslims with a certificate from A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Now, they are busy getting Muslim leaders to speak up for the deal.
SP president Mulayam Singh and general secretary Amar Singh called on Syed Ahmed Bukhari, imam of the country’s largest mosque, on Friday.
“The issue is not whether the deal is anti-or-pro-Muslim. If at all, it is about whether the deal is in the interest of the country.
This is not a Muslim issue and if it is in the interest of the country, it will naturally be in the interest of Indian Muslims,” Bukhari told HT. He said it was wrong to brand the deal “anti-Muslim”. “It’s something nuclear experts should decide, not clerics.”
