Even as CBI plans to oppose actor Sanjay Dutt's petition seeking suspension of his conviction to contest Lok Sabha election, Samajwadi Party on Wednesday claimed that he will remain its candidate from the Lucknow constituency.
"We have finalised his name as our candidate for Lucknow Lok Sabha seat and there is no alternative candidate for him. It is Sanjay Dutt for Lucknow and no one else for us," SP general secretary Amar Singh said.
He was responding to questions that CBI may oppose in Supreme Court the petition of Sanjay Dutt, seeking suspension of his conviction in connection with 1993 Mumbai serial blasts to contest coming Lok Sabha polls.
Singh had earlier claimed that Dutt's wife Manyata could be fielded if the Bollywood star was denied permission to contest the election.
"The matter is sub-judice...I will not say anything on this," Singh added.
To a question on BJP's claim that an Arms Act convict should not contest election, Singh pointed out that cricketer Navjot Singh Siddhu, convicted of murder, was granted permission to contest Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket.
