The father of the Uber rape victim has expressed satisfaction over the verdict and hopes the verdict will act as a deterrent.

“I left the courtroom relieved and satisfied. What my family and I fought for over 11 months bore a fruitful result. Justice was done,” the father of the 26-year-old woman who was raped by an Uber cab driver told HT, soon after a Delhi court sentenced Shiv Kumar Yadav to life imprisonment.

Breaking into tears, the father said it had been a tough journey but he was proud of his daughter to have faced it so bravely.

“We have won this battle and have succeeded in sending the message across rightly. Since the accused has been given a life term, it will act as a deterrent. This is one of the very few cases in which a harsh punishment has been given and it will help check the growing incidents of rape in the country,” he said.

“It is my daughter who braved through the endless questions from the defence counsel and was still coherent. However, I am glad it is over. I... thank the Delhi Police for carrying out a fair investigation and the court to have heard our case and help us get justice,” he said.

Now that justice has been delivered, he does not want this issue to be brought up again. “I want my daughter to forget about the incident completely... Even she wants to forget about the incident. Now I want her to concentrate on her profession and personal life.”
