A Supreme Court lawyer was stabbed and robbed of his mobile phone by three men on a motorcycle in the Capital's high security Kasturba Gandhi Marg on Wednesday night.
Ajmal Edappagath, 42, a resident of MS apartment at KG Marg, was walking back to his home from his gym in outer circle of Connaught Place when three unknown men stabbed him with a knife and snatched his iPhone.
The incident took place outside Max Mueller Bhawan, just 10 metres from the nearest police picket, at 10:15pm.
Edappagath, a close relative of union minister E Ahamed, was stabbed in his stomach. He ran towards his house, almost 150 metres away from the spot of incident, and fainted just outside his apartment gate. He was admitted in the intensive care unit of RML Hospital.
"I was coming back from the gym when three men on a motorbike tried to snatch my mobile and wallet outside Max Mueller Bhawan. They stabbed me when I resisted. They managed to snatch my phone," said Edappagath, who is from Kannur in Kerala.
The incident highlights the lax security in the Capital's high profile area, which is also home to several MPs and VIPs. Despite heavy police deployment in the area, the attackers were able to flee.
"The shopkeeper outside our building informed us about the incident. My husband was taken to the hospital in a PCR van before we got to know about the incident. He's out of danger now but doctors said he has lost a lot of blood," said his wife Sauda.
The police have registered a case but no one has been arrested. "Investigations suggest habitual offenders could be behind the attack," said an officer.
