Days after the Supreme Court quashed reservations in promotion for members of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) in government jobs, political parties united in the Rajya Sabha to call for a constitutional amendment to provide it.

Upholding the Allahabad High Court verdict, the apex court had quashed ‘consequential seniority’ — gaining seniority faster if one is an SC or ST— brought in by the Mayawati government and quotas in promotions in Uttar Pradesh.

Replying to the discussion, minister of state for personnel V Narayanasamy said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is seized of the matter and is willing to call an all-party meeting to build a consensus for bringing a legislation.

Narayanasamy also said much more needed to be done for empowering weaker sections of the society.
