The Supreme Court has slated October 3 as the date for final hearing in the controversy over building of the interstate Babli irrigation dam and execution of other projects on the Godavari by Maharashtra, which Andhra Pradesh said would adversely affect its Telangana region.
A three-judge bench of justice RM Lodha, justice TS Thakur and justice AR Dave said it would examine the matter at length from October 3 and then pass appropriate directions. Appearing for Andhra Pradesh, senior counsel K Parasaran said Maharashtra was also executing 11 other irrigation projects on the Godavari in violation of the Central Water Commission orders.
Andhra Pradesh contended that if these projects are allowed to be executed, Telangana region will turn into a desert as they have the capacity to draw 65 thousand metric cubic feet of additional water from the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP).
The Babli project was constructed across river Godavari near Nanded district at a cost of Rs 300 crore to ensure drinking water to parched regions of the state
