Schedule rules over parents’ vacation

It is around this time that the Mishras plan their annual vacation. This year, however, instead of browsing the web for holiday packages, they are busy going through school websites for information on nursery admission.

“This year, all we can think of is which school our child will get admission in,” said Anand Mishra, whose three-year-old son is ready for nursery school.

For most parents with three-year-olds, nursery admission schedule is proving to be the party spoiler. Most are giving up their vacation and party plans this year, as the admission process begins from January 1.

“We generally go out of the city or plan parties to celebrate the New Year but this year we have shelved our plans. In fact, my husband who works in Mumbai will fly down to Delhi for two weeks to help me with the admission process,” said Shivani Vadera, who is seeking admission for her three-year-old daughter.

Last year the sale and submission of forms lasted a month from December 15 to January 15. This year, however, the process begins on January 1 and ends January 15. “Even if we do not go out of the city, we generally call friends over on December 31 to ring in the new year, but this year we have not organised any party, as the next morning we have to visit schools and collect admission forms,” said PK Hari, a parent.

While most schools will start sale of forms from the first day of the new year under the Directorate of Education's common admission schedule, others such as Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, and Mount Carmel School, Anand Niketan, will start two days later. “Since it is the first day of the year and people are generally in a holiday mood and January 2 being a Sunday, we will most probably begin the sale of forms from January 3,” said Jyoti Bose, principal Springdales, Dhaula Kuan.
