Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's security was breached in his constituency on Thursday when a local trader carrying a licensed pistol came close to him when he was leaving the Ramlila ground after a meeting.
Special Protection Group personnel detained Pradeep Kumar Soni, who claimed he was trying to give an application to the leader in connection with the murder of his father and brother. Police said Soni was freed after questioning.
This was the third instance in the last six months of civilians with firearms being found in close vicinity of Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh. On July 7, one Harikrishan Sharma carrying a revolver was detained near Tappal intersection for allegedly breaching Gandhi's security during his Kisan Sandesh Yatra.
