Delhi is a city that doesn’t really care much about its elders. This unpleasant fact was once again driven home when a senior citizen couple was found dead at their Mandavli residence in east Delhi on Saturday morning.

The couple—Ramesh Kapoor (70) and Rama Kapoor (65)—had reportedly been ill for some time. While Rama was suffering from cerebral palsy, Ramesh had undergone a hip replacement surgery a few months back and his movements were restricted.

“After the surgery, Ramesh rarely used to come down from the first floor of his house. There was no visitor apart from a newspaper vendor and they used to take grocery and other items by lowering a rope, tied with a bag from the first floor to ground floor,” Prabhakar, DCP (east), said.

While the exact cause of their deaths is yet to be ascertained, police believe they died on Thursday, ostensibly due to lack of care. Police said there was no ransacking of the house and that they were waiting for the post-mortem report. The couple did not have any children.

“Forensic examination and post-mortem details are crucial as there is no evidence of robbery or forced entry. The bodies were highly decomposed and the couple was living alone. Inquest proceeding is on and no case has been registered so far,” Prabhakar, DCP (east) said. The couple was living in 699/1, Chandra Vihar of east Delhi and were not in touch with their neighbours.

Police sources say, both husband and wife were ill. “We have managed to trace one of their relatives who lives in Patparganj. Even he doesn’t know many details,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.

Ramesh was last seen on Wednesday evening. No one saw him after that. The police suspect the couple died on Thursday.

“On Saturday morning, the neighbours noticed a foul smell coming out from the room and informed the police. We broke open the door and recovered the bodies,” he added.

Police said there is no evidence of robbery or murder as the jewellery the couple was wearing was intact apart from other costly items. Police are now waiting for post-mortem report and are questioning neighbours to get more details of the elderly couple. They have recovered pension slips from the house which suggests Ramesh was getting pension from a government organisation.
