A 75-year-old woman was bludgeoned to death at her house in the posh Greater Kailash-II locality of south Delhi on Sunday night.
The attackers had entered forcibly into the house and decamped with cash and valuables worth several lakhs. The robbers had tied the hands and legs of the victim, dumped her in the bathroom and decamped with the loot by the rear door.
Eight people have been detained in the case, including the recently hired driver of the family. The police have not ruled out property dispute as the motive behind the crime. The multi-storey house in the area was registered in the name of the victim.
The victim, identified as Hanslata Maheshwari, was alone when the incident happened. Her younger son, Sudhir, and his family had gone to the nearby Jehapennah Club to watch the final match of the IPL. The murder was reported around 11 pm from E 310 in GK-II. Her elder son, Vijay, and his family live in the adjacent block. The Maheshwaris deal in dry fruits and have a shop in Khari Baoli. The victim’s husband died fifteen years ago and she used to cook and do all the household chores on her own.
The police said the robbers knew about the whereabouts of the family and were aware that the victim would be home alone for at least a couple of hours from 8 pm.
“I returned around 10.10 pm and found the door open from outside. I rushed inside and found the entire ground floor ransacked. I called my mother but did not get any response. After some running around, I found her body dumped inside the bathroom. They had tied her hands and legs,” said Sudhir. The police said the victim’s son discovered the crime when he returned from the club leaving the cricket match midway.
A case of murder and house trespassing has been registered at the CR Park police station.
“The crime was pre-planned. The roads were deserted on Sunday as the final IPL match was underway. We have rounded up a few people for interrogation,” said a senior police officer. The police were also questioning the security guard posted at the colony gate.
