Separate fires kill two in Delhi

Two people were charred to death and property worth lakhs were gutted as fire broke out at two separate locations in the Capital till Wednesday morning, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials said.

According to the DFS, a major fire broke out at a plastic scrap market in west Delhi’s Mundka area late on Tuesday night. “The blaze was reported from one of the storage godowns in the plastic scrap market located in Mundka around 9.15pm. Since the area has a large accumulation of flammable substances, around 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire,” said a senior DFS official.

However, the fire quickly spread and engulfed several heaps of plastics stored at several adjacent godowns in the area, DFS officials said, adding that they were yet to ascertain the cause of the blaze.

In another incident, two persons were charred to death after a fire broke out on the second floor of a building in central Delhi’s Chandni Mahal area due, police said.

“The incident was reported from a handicraft items manufacturing unit located in the Chandni Mahal area around 11.30pm on Tuesday night and the victims have been identified as Wasim (19) and Naeem (35), said a senior police officer.

According to the police, both victims were rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.

“Three fire tenders were pressed into service and the blaze was doused in 10 minutes. The fire broke out due to short-circuit. There were handicraft items in the said premises that ended-up intensifying the blaze,” said a senior DFS official.
